45-year-old coolie worker buried alive

Udupi: A coolie, working in a furrow meant for burying underground drainage pipes got buried alive after a mound of earth caved in and fell on him on Friday. This tragic incident occurred near Karavali Bypass.

The deceased has been identified as Bahadur Singh (45), a native of Bihar. He was working for Navayuga company to which national highway work has been entrusted. As part of the road widening work, he was working with fellow workers, Surendra Singh and Chandan Singh.

For fixing underground drainage pipe in the ten-feet deep furrow dug by the side of the road with the help of a backhoe, Bahadur had climbed down the ditch, when mud got deposited on him in large quantity. By the time he was extricated, he had died of suffocation.
