Mangalore: In a bizzare turn of events, members of a few Hindu organisations celebrated the death of Jnanapith awardee U R Ananthamurthy, by bursting crackers at Mallikatte in Mangalore.

The city had witnessed protests when Ananthamurthy had said that he won’t live in India if Modi became the prime minister. Bajrang Dal district Suraksha Pramukh Puneeth Kottari had filed a complaint with the police against Ananthamurthy for his remarks against idol worship stating that it had hurt the sentiments of the Hindus.

“A group of seven to eight men distributed sweets to the people and burst crackers,” an eyewitness told Deccan Herald. Sources said there were jubilations at Car Street as well.

Chikmagalur

There were also reports of similar celebrations at Lions Circle in Mudigere of Chikmagalur district. Around 15 pro-Hindu activists gathered at the circle at 7.30 pm, shouted slogans against Ananthamurthy, burst crackers and vanished from the scene.
