An evening with the Writer Johan Chris Lewis at Milagres College, Kallianpur

Udupi: Department of English and Literary Association of Milagres College, Kallianpur organized to encourage program “An Evening with Budding Writer Johan Chris Lewis final year student of B. Com at Milagres College Audio Visual Hall on Thursday, September, 2016.

The program began with an invocation prayer. Chief guests of the special program were Dr. Prof. Shrinivas Rao, Professor in English, Department of MGM College Udupi and Prof. Prasad Rao, Professor in English at Tenkanidiyoor Government First Grade College.

Dr. Gerald Pinto Principal of Milagres College, presided over the function. Dr. Prof Shrinivas Rao during in his insight on Johan’s fantastic poems said it is not easy to write poetry and need ability and patience to write the poetry. The way Johan during his student life achieved a lot of things. Johan was well written with concise and accurate use of language.

A JAIL U CAN NEITHER SHARE NOR STAY
I beg to differ from the prison around me,
Walls that limit my thoughts,
Doors that Block my way,
And stop me every day………
Light that I illuminate burning,
Is Light of wisdom that prevailing?
My persons, my burns,
My reason and my concerns.

In his insight on Johan’s second poetry Prof Prasad Rao said that compered the diamond ore prior to its shining process. The main distinguishing poetry compared to prose can be encapsulating ideas with the minimum words. And it has done by Johan with a mantric quality of language. The Nature is all around, but a poet Johan able to capture its essence in the written word which brings us a new appreciation for the wonders of nature. The poetry often takes its inspiration from nature.

What do I call this
I stand on the shore of a lake,
watching the tip of stone drowning,
Its peeping out of water with whatever little its got,
Just like me giving everything on a scratch.
As the water goes down, it rises,
Revealing what it’s about,
It’s not about what you see,
But about what you be………

In his insight of the poem written by Johan Chris Lewis Prof. Cyril Mathais HOD of English, Department of Milagres College said that good poetry that articulates our own inner feeling. There does not seem a separation between poet and reader. For Johan, his grandfather is role model definitely. Good poetry in the sense that it is from the heart. He appreciates Johan has written wonderful poems with terrific meanings.

Glitter & Gain
Let me not be intoxicated,
By the beads in that piece of thread.
Let me not be captivated,
By the musty glitter and glain.
Give me not glain in adoration, my father
Let the carve be glitter, and the chisel my gain.
Years of scriptures, written Glain,
The Glory, the glitter all in vain……….

In his insight of the poem, Dr. Vincent Alva Associate Professor of English in the department, he gave some of the qualities of wonderful Johan Lewis. He wondered how he will get time to think and write beautiful poems. Good poetry is poetry that we can feel identification with. He is also all rounder being a sportsman, being a social worker, being active in the Youth Organization of the diocese and many more. He is the leader in fact. He is running his business during his student life. He all praised to his wonderful qualities and many more…

In his note of gratitude Johan thankful to his parents, grandfather and his family and moreover institutions which studies from Kindergarten to Under Graduate education in Milagres Institutions. He spoke how he was influenced to become a poet. Indeed, it also influenced him by his grandfather. He said one day he wrote a hidden love letter on his college diary, then his cousin sister found that letter and said that was a good blog and so I influenced to write something in the blog. Day by day lot of visitors increased to in such way that surely I have to do something. He was thankful to his professors for the arrangement of wonderful programme.

During his presidential address Dr. Gerald Pinto complimented all to the successful programme arranged by the Literacy Association and Department of English. He was thanked all concerned during in his address and wished to success for Johan. His mum actively participated in Alumni Association as well as PTA of the college.

Johan’s grandfather, Peter Picardo and his wife, mother Joyce Lewis were present on the dais.

Earlier Salwa welcomed the gathered. Jyotsna Lewis proposed vote of thanks and Nayana Almeida compered the programme. The members of Literary Association, lecturers and other among were present the rare but excellent programme to support talent of Johan Chris Lewis.
