Brain dead woman gives new lease of life to seven patients

Udupi: The vital organs of Nirmala Bhat (51) who was declared brain dead by doctors at KMC, Manipal gifted new lease of life to seven patients. She had suffered a near fatal mishap at Thellaru.

Her heart valves, kidneys, liver and 2 corneas were harvested with the permission of her family members on Tuesday. The liver and heart valves were sent to the BGS Hospital in Bengaluru and Narayana Hridayalaya respectively by creating a Green Corridor, to be transplanted to patients there.

One of the kidneys was transplanted to a patient in Mangaluru KMC while another was given to a patient at Manipal KMC. The corneas gifted eye sight to two patients at Manipal KMC.

Nirmala, wife of Vasudeva Bhat was severely injured when she was hit by a bike while she was walking on the roadside on June 22 at around 7.30 pm. She was immediately rushed to the hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. However, doctors declared her brain dead on June 25 at 12.30 noon.
