Udupi: Cow vigilantes have killed a man in Udupi in Karnataka who was transporting cows. 18 people have been arrested for the murder according to the local police.
The victim, Prashant Pooojary, was traveling with a friend identified as Akshay Devadiga when they were attacked by members of a right-wing group named the Hindu Jagrana Vedike. Mr Poojary died of his injuries after the assault.
Mr Devadiga is in hospital.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi came down hard on recent attacks by cow protection squads, warning that most cow vigilantes use religion as a cover for crime. His government has ordered states to ensure that cow vigilantes do not indulge in violence.
