DAHS students create awareness among local vendors

Published On : 04 May 2016   |  Reported By : Canaranews Network

Manipal: The students of MSc. Hospitality and Tourism, Department of Allied Hospitality Studies (DAHS), Manipal University made more than 2500 paper bags and envelopes and distributed to the vendors in and around Manipal to create awareness on its use rather than plastics which have harmful effects. In any case, with the ban on plastic bags an alternative has to be found and the students have reached out to the vendors and also taught them to make bags with paper.

The students are spreading awareness through Prakriti, a community outreach programme under Student Empowerment for Environmental Development (SEED). The programme focuses on 3Rs -- reduce, reuse and recycle. The activity was supervised by Prof. P Valsaraj, Coordinator DAHS along with students Ashish P, Abhishek Dev, Yashika Singh, Apurva Singh, Mugil V, Shalini Pallikila, and Harshad Muthe.

The campaign not only brought out the creativity in students but also the responsibility of the vendors towards society. The vendors assured the students that they will start making their paper bags soon and also help in banning plastic.
