Helmets while riding two wheeler's compulsory after 20th January

Udupi : Helmets that protective headgear should be compulsory after 20th January, 2016 in Udupi district, said Annamali K. District Superintendent of Police. He was speaking during the press meet at the SP office, here on Wednesday, 13th January, 2016.

He said that a fining process will be initiated after 20th January against two wheelers and pillion rider if found without protective Helmets. He also said that a fine of Rs. 100 will be charged for the rider and also pillion rider if found driving without branded helmets. There will be no grace period to make compulsory for wearing helmets during riding, whereas, Police have no right to give grace period.

He also said that there is no intention to harassment for the public. All the Police personnel of the district told to use helmets compulsory while driving.

The District Police received notification from Transport Secretariat, Bangalore, that the draft of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Amendment Rules, 2015 was published as required under sub section (1) of section 212 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 138 read with section 129 and 212 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the Government of Karnataka made the rules. As per the rule no. 2, Amendment of rule section 230 – in the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules 1989, Every person while driving or riding (both for ruder and pillion rider) a motor cycle of any type, i.e. to say motor cycles, scooters and mopeds irrespective of brake horse power of the vehicle within the limits of Karnataka State shall wear protective headgear.

Lions Club agreed to provide helmets for traffic policemen. He also said that the helmets should be ISI mark and to be covered head and ears. The dealers of helmets should sell their helmets with MRP price. If any one can ask more than MRP prices can contact Police No 100 or 2520444.

Asking with media persons, Annamalai said that the wearing helmets below certain age of children will be discussed with RTO and legal opinions. The public should understand that no insurance or damage in case of accidents if found no helmets used while riding. There should not be unnecessary complications regarding wearing helmets compulsory, he said.
