Mangaluru: Lourdes Central School, Bejai held a successful Social Science Exhibition for classes VI to X on October 25 which was a grand success. It was an eventful day, where both students and teachers learned a lot from each other.

Aims and objectives of the exhibition:

1. To apply what the students learn.
2. To develop the student’s creative, aesthetic, kinaesthetic and speaking skills.
3. To showcase the talents of students.
4. To highlight the role of social development and to inculcate feelings of oneness.

The school’s creative sixth graders opened their eyes to the vast universe beyond, with projects on the theme ‘Our Solar System’. Their models on the different planets and constellations, the sun, the moon and the stars were innovative, imaginative and in some cases very creative.

The seventh graders on their theme ‘Environment’ brought to the forefront the different aspects of our environment with models on mountains, grasslands, wetlands, forests, biosphere and working of rivers, while highlighting their degradation.

The eighth graders introduced the ever-growing world of industries by showing the inner workings of industries like cotton, jute, coffee, poultry and dairy. The models were inventive and showed industries through a very different perspective.

Class IX presented projects on the topic ‘Disaster Management’, which is in itself ironic as they are disasters in themselves. They shone light upon the shadows of the modern world with their projects on terrorism, natural disasters, industrial and chemical disasters etc.

Lastly, the students of Class X presented the topic ‘Popular Struggles and Movements’. They spoke on the importance of common people in democracy and showed how different countries have achieved democracy throughout history.

The exhibition showcased realistic models of our solar system. Some of the models showcased the Earth’s structure, while others focused on the topographical features of our planet. The different charts, models, and diagrams describing various flora and fauna were beautifully done by the students. The models/project work was considered for subject enrichment activity.

It was an individual project/activity. Materials used for the models were:

a) Thermo coal
b) Discarded material
c) Paper mash
d) Plastic spoons
e) Twigs, leaves, sticks, straws
f) Tin

All in all, it was a great learning experience and lots of fun for everyone. Each project in its own way was notable and unique. Quoting John F Kennedy words 'Things do not happen. Things are made to happen'.

Mangaluru: The much-awaited Social Science Exhibition was flagged off marking the day as a landmark event in the calendar of Lourdes Central School.

It was an excellent venue for the students to showcase the extent of their knowledge of the subject, as well as their abilities to research and explore the depths of the various intricacies of their respective topics.

The topics for the project were given to the students in the last week of September and they were given adequate time to prepare for the event. Their models were also considered as part of their Subject Enrichment Activity. The models were judged on the basis of design and layout, content and accuracy, artistic skill and overall presentation. The best three projects from each section were awarded certificates and trophies.

The topic given to Class VI was 'Landforms in India'. The students made expert use of thermocol and other materials to artistically represent various geographical landforms in India, ranging from plateaus, deltas and plains to forests, valleys and deserts. The students displayed an astounding show of knowledge on each topic, showing that they had moved much further than textbook knowledge.

The topic given to class VII was 'Natural Vegetation and Wildlife, Exogenic and Endogenic Forces and Transport & Communication'. The models constructed by the students of class VII represented and reflected the concepts taught to them in class, including the workings of various geographical phenomena, mass communication and transport. The students’ explanation and presentation again gave evidence of the depth of knowledge which each student had for their individual projects.

The topic given to Class VIII was 'Industries'. The pitfalls and benefits of this omnipresent process were dutifully and systematically represented by the students’ models. Various charts were also prepared to better illustrate the various processes involved. The different processes that came under the gambit of ‘Industrialisation’ like dairy products, refining of oil and others were meticulously displayed.

The topic given to class IX was 'Disasters and Mitigation Techniques'. The students prepared projects describing in detail the effects and consequences of various natural as well as artificial disasters and included the methods and techniques involved in preventing and mitigating these circumstances. The significance of safe Water was also reinforced by various natural filtration systems using different household materials. Several innovative models were seen, some utilising truly  ingenious methods, with students employing their artistic skills to the maximum.

The topic given to class X was 'Money And Credit'. This was presented in the form of a written project. Each student came up with a project filled to the brim with various facts and exquisite diagrams which mapped the history of money and credit, all the way from the barter system to the role of banks in modern day economies. The written projects were judged based on content, originality, presentation and accuracy, coupled with a VIVA for content assimilation.

The Social Science Exhibition - 2018 held at Lourdes Central School was thus a grand success with the support of the Principal Fr Robert D’Souza, and teaching and non-teaching staff, thus proving to be an excellent platform for the students to showcase their skills and hard work.

A spectacular and well synchronized march-past, accompanied by a lively band, shook the ground. The chief guest received the salute from the marching teams and hoisted the school flag. The opening ceremony began with an invocation for God’s blessings on the day. The audience were welcomed by a lovely dance followed by welcome address the principal Sr Melissa.
