Mangalore: The coastal area of Karnataka, Mangalore is a nature-scenic place. Many temples are situated here and moreover, this place is one of the renowned tourist spots.

People from various religion, caste and language are living here. Cultural diversity, folk songs, yakshaghana, kola, St. Mary, Uroos, church, temple, masjid, unity among Hindus-Muslims-Christians-Jains are the speciality of this city. In spoken language, it is called as Mangluru, Tulu people call it as Kudla, for Konkani people it is Kodial, for muslims it is Maikala, for the nearby Keralites, it is Mangalapuram and for the young generation, it is Mangalore! But, henceforth it will be called as ‘Mangaluru’. Last year ‘Bangalore’ was changed as ‘Bengaluru’ and after that, all the newspapers, English channels have started using the name as ‘Bengaluru’ only. Hence, there was a demand that ‘Mangalore’ should also be called as ‘Mangaluru’.

The government started working on that. Proposal was also submitted for changing the name. This proposal was submitted to the central government during the golden jubilee celebration of Karnataka State, i.e. in 2006, when Dharam Singh government was ruling. As a result of this, the names of many places of Karnataka have been changed to Kannada completely and Mangaluru is also one among them. This will be a gift by the government during the celebration of Kannada Rajyotsava.

The government will change the names of 11 cities of Karnataka. ‘Chikkamagaluru’ was called as ‘Chikmagaluru’ by the English people in their language. This has been changed by the government as ‘Chikkamagaluru’. The names of cities will be changed as follows: Belagaon as Belagavi, Hubli as Hubballi, Gulbarga as Kulaburgi, Bellary as Ballary, Bijapur as Vijapura, Hospet as Hosapette, Tumkur as Tumakuru, Mysore as Mysuru, Shimoga as Shivamogga.

The people of this area feel proud that Mangalore will henceforth be called as ‘Mangaluru’ in pure Kannada as per the huge demand placed.
