Mass India Mahiti Seva Samiti demands minimum labour for workers in hotels

Udupi: G A Koteyar, President of Mass India Mahiti Seva Samiti addressed media persons at Udupi Press Club regarding wages for hotel staff.

"Every Hotel owners should pay their employees a minimum wages which passed resolution in October, 2016.No labour unions speak about the minimum wages to the hotel staff. There are no excuses for underpaying hotel staff what they are legally entitled to. The minimum Wages Act 1948, is a welfare legislation enacted to prevent exploitation of unorganized illiterate and ignorant workers in the form of paying unjustifiably low wages."

He said that the Mass Media Non-governmental organization, labour division and the common people welfare association will raise the awareness on minimum wages for hotel workers and official working hours should be eight hours. All the workers should be entitled to the benefit of Employees State Insurance Scheme. All the workers should get gratuity. All the facilities including the boarding for hotel workers should be provided. The awareness in terms of payment of prescribed wages, daily hours of work, awareness among the hotel owners and workers about various provisions of the Act and difficulties faced in the enforcement of the Act in scheduled employment.
