Mangaluru: Traffic barricades on September 18 were handed over to the traffic police department at a function held at the campus of Vikas PU College by Vikas Group of Institutions as a mark of participation in the road and safety measures.

Uma Prashanth, deputy commissioner of police, addressing the students spoke on the importance of strictly obeying traffic rules and also appealed to the students not to get addicted to mobile phones. She asserted that children underage must not be given access to vehicles to drive or ride and she added that it is the foremost responsibility of the parents to ensure this. In such cases the parents are penalized along with the children who have erred. She also stressed on practicing the values and being more and more humane whichever profession they belong to. Women empowerment is to be done by women themselves taking the situation in hand. Though education is the greatest tool for women empowerment, how one thinks and deals with the situations is also important, she added.

She encouraged the students to do good and right things and if they find out any crime around, they should report to the concerned authorities like a responsible citizen. Student life is golden life, but they must enjoy life without compromising on their studies and must avoid taking shortcuts in life. She advised students to respect nature, life, elders and nation.

She later interacted with the audience which consisted of students of Vikas PU College and Vikas College of Physiotherapy and teachers. While informing a questioner that serving society was the motto behind her choosing the profession of police, she reminded the students that one can serve society in many ways in spite of being in many other professions. The inspired students also asked about the various entrance examinations to make an entry into the police force and she enthusiastically responded to them all.

The programme was attended by Dr Ananth Prabhu G, advisor, Vikas Group of Institutions, Parthasarathi, coordinator, Vikas Group of Institutions, Dr Ajay Takur, principal, Vikas College of Physiotherapy and Prof Rajaram Rao, principal, Vikas PU College.

Shruthi S Bhandary, lecturer in Physics, compered the programme.
