Prakash Mallya to receive K K Pai National Banking Award

Manipal: Sri Prakash Mallya, Former Chairman of Vijaya Bank has been selected for K K Pai National Banking Award for the year 2016-17 according to a press release issued by Dr K K Ammannaya, Secretary of K K Pai Trust. The Selection Committee constituted by the Trust has unanimously recommended the name of Sri Prakash Mallya for the award and the K K Pai Trust in its recently concluded meeting accepted the recommendation and resolved to confer the Award on Sri Prakash Mallya. In the meeting, Prof H S Ballal, Sri T Ashok Pai, Sri K M Udupa & Dr K K Ammannaya were present. Sri Prakash Mallya who assumed office as Chairman of Vijaya Bank on 1st April 2006 served in that position till 31st July 2008.

During his stewardship, Vijaya Bank achieved most impressive results on a wide front. The Bank which had incurred net loss in the quarter ended 31.03.2006, achieved Net Profit of Rs.72.63 Crores in the quarter ended 30.6.2006 being first quarter of Sri Mallya’s leadership in the Bank. In 2006-07 and 2007-08, the Bank achieved Net Profits of Rs.331 Crores and Rs.361 Crores respectively. During the period from 31.3.2006 and 31.3.2008 total business of the Bank rose from Rs.44,770 Crores to Rs.79,791/- Crores and total deposits increased from Rs.27,709 Crores to Rs.47,952/- Crores. Also, outstanding loans of the Bank increased from Rs.17,062 Crores to Rs.32,019/- Crores during the same period. During the above period, per employee business increased from Rs.3.69 Crores to Rs.6.13 Crores. Net NPAs of the Bank in percentage terms declined from 0.85 to 0.57 per cent during the above period. Net Profit of the Bank during the above period increased from Rs.126.88 Crores to Rs.361.26 Crores. During the above period, the total business, total deposits, outstanding loans and per employee business grew by 79 per cent, 73 per cent, 88 per cent and 67 per cent respectively.

The other significant achievements of Sri Mallya during his stewardship in the Bank include opening of 128 new branches thus taking number of branches to 1051, increase in the number of atms from 128 to 272, increase in the coverage of core banking from 69 per cent to 93 per cent of Bank’s business, launch of several innovative banking products, adoption of an integrated risk management policy and adoption and implementation of several new policies.

In 2006-2007 Sri Mallya celebrated the Platinum Jubilee of the Bank with the opening of 1000th branch. During the Platinum Jubilee year, a book containing the history of the Bank was published.

Before joining Vijaya Bank, Sri Mallya was Executive Director in Syndicate Bank. Sri Mallya started his banking career in 1973 with Canara Bank as an Officer. By dint of hard work, he rose from position to position and became General Manager in Canara Bank. He worked in several responsible positions in Canara Bank such as Deputy General Manager, Head of Chairman’s Secretariat, Head of Delhi Circle , etc. He was also Editor of house journal “Shreyas”.

Sri Mallya is a post graduate in Economics. He was a research student under the guidance of well known Economist Prof V M Dandekar. Sri Mallya did research in the Gokhale Institute at Pune for two years and brought out several papers on banking issues.

Sri Mallya participated in many training programmes in India and in other countries. The most important training programme include General Management Programme in IIM Ahamadabad (2003), Management of Organisational change at Maastricht School of Management, Maastricht (October 2000), Management of Organisational change for competitiveness at Administrative Staff College Hyderabad (November 1998) , SIBOS 2006 in Australia. SIBOS 2007 at Boston & Newyork and investors meet in Singapore in 2007.

Sri Prakash Mallya was recipient of many prestigious awards. The awards won by him include Aryabhata award for excellence in Banking (2006), M Visweswaraya Award, Innovative Leadership Award (2007) from PRCI and T A Pai Award for excellence in Banking (2007) from Delhi Kannadiga, New Delhi. Now Sri Prakash Mallya has won the most coveted K K Pai National Banking Award. Sri T Sathish U Pai, President of K K Pai Trust has congratulated Sri Mallya.

Sri Prakash Mallya is currently holding positions as under:-

a) Director of Lakshmi Vilas Bank since September 2014

b) Director on the Board of Stock Holding Corporation of India since September 2008

c) President, Canara Bank Relief & Welfare Society since December 2008.

Sri Mallya was Chairman of IFCI for two years till 2012. He was also Director in Bank of India (from October 2008 to October 2011). He was Director in Falcon Tyres Ltd & Lanco Solar Energy Pvt Ltd and Lanco Infratech Pvt Ltd.

The award presentation function will be held on 9th October 2016 at 4 PM in the T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Manipal, the press release said.
