Rally held on occasion of World Environment Day

Manipal: An environment awareness rally by about 250 students from the institutions of Academy of General Education, planting of 50 fruit-bearing saplings and renaming a road were the programmes held on the occasion of World Environment Day by Manipal University Manipal here on Saturday.

The rally was flagged off by the Registrar Manipal University, Dr Narayana Sabhahit and the students walked down Tiger Circle to the ground opposite MIT’s main entrance.

The Nagabana road from the entrance to MIT’s Hostel gate, which just got a new look, has been named after Sir M Visvesvaraya and was formally inaugurated by Dr H Vinod Bhat, Vice Chancellor, Manipal University. Sir Visvesvaraya is known for his engineering works and contribution towards nation-building in his career spanning over 30 years as engineer, 20 years as administrator and 20 years as adviser and statesman.

The chief guest for the stage programme, Dr K Ramnarayan, Vice President Faculty Development and Alumni Relations gave the message for the day. Talking about the immense harm being done to environment he said, “We are the agents of change. Change can happen, but change should not happen only externally, it should happen internally too. Much has been said about external change. But what we do internally will be better because we become clean, we become green and we become pure. So, make the world a wonderful place to live in and make your internal world even better”.

And the message from Ashiza Sheik, a class 10 student of Madhavakripa School was, “Create an environment that does not need protection. I don’t want you and me to protect this environment, I want us to create an environment which doesn’t need protection”. Director of Manipal Institute of Technology, Dr G.K.Prabhu gave a brief on when and how World Environment day started and welcomed the gathering. Mr Ashok Pai, Secretary Dr TMA Pai Foundation and the youngest son of the founder briefly spoke about the genesis of Manipal University and the road in particular. Dr Suma Nair, Director Student affairs gave the vote of thanks.
