St Aloysius College celebrates College Day

Mangaluru: Established in 1880, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) prides itself in its history of 138 years. The college celebrated its annual College Day with the theme ‘Celebrating Cultural Diversities’ on Friday, March 9 on the college grounds, along with commemorating the 450th birth anniversary of St Aloysius Gonzaga after whom the college is named.

Albert W D’Souza, chairman of Aldel Education Trusts, Palghar, Maharashtra, was the chief guest for the event, who was welcomed by the Students’ Council members in a traditional way with chendamelam. Prof Precilla D’Silva, HOD Of Zoology, the convenor of the college day delivered the welcome address.

The vibrant celebration began with the prayer and the welcome dance. Fr Dionysius Vaz, rector of the college presided over the function. “A college annual day gives us a sense of history and a sense of mission and purpose,” he opined. He reflected on the life of St Aloysius Gonzaga and thanked all those who were responsible for the growth and success of St Aloysius Institutions over the past 138 years. The annual report of the academic year was presented by Fr Dr Praveen Martis, the principal of the college who reflected about the status of the institution. It was followed by a video presentation highlighting the success of the college of the past year. Chief guest Albert W D‘Souza, the chairman of Aldel Education Trusts and managing director of Printania Offset Pvt Ltd recollected the memories of his times at St Aloysius Institutions. He spoke about life experiences and motivated the young minds to face the challenges. He also spoke about entrepreneurship and encouraged the youth.

Following the address by the dignitaries, the meritorious students and sports achievers were honoured with mementos and certificates. Dr A M Narahari, the registrar of the college; vice-principals of each block; and Prof Rajgopal Bhat, department of Chemistry, who was the co- convenor of the event graced the event with their presence. The vote of thanks was rendered by Aman Ahmed, the president of Students ‘Council.

The theme ‘Celebrating Cultural Diversities’ was put into verse and sung by the college choir, composed by students Mark and Aman. The students along with their parents and the staffs of the college gathered for the marvellous event. The students came up with a variety of cultural programmes which added colour to the glorious event and was a feast to the eyes for the audience.
