Mangaluru: St Ann's College of Education inaugurated the events for its platinum jubilee year on Friday.

The college has carved a niche for itself over the years with its establishment in the year 1943 as the first private training college in Karnataka State. It is now heading towards its platinum jubilee, golden jubilee of Alumnae Association, silver jubilee of starting the MEd course and the sesquicentennial celebration of Apostolic Carmel.

To look ahead and visualize the college growing into higher standards of teaching and research, many achievements wherein an array of activities and events are planned all through this momentous platinum jubilee year and the first among these was the workshop on ‘Content Enrichment and Constructivist Teaching Methods for School Teachers’. The objective of the workshop was to complement the regular school syllabus with additional contents that goes beyond the realms of textbooks and classrooms by using different strategies of learning thus making teaching and learning more meaningful and thereby increasing student motivation and fostering the students’ social skills, learning strategies, independence, and self confidence.

Experienced teacher educators and subject experts conducted various sessions during the workshop. The programme commenced by a short inaugural function with the presence of Sr Rose Agnes, assistant provincial superior, St Ann’s Convent Provincial House, Mangaluru as the chief guest. A documentary comprising of the glimpses of the history of St Ann’s Institution and events planned for the platinum jubilee year were highlighted. After the formal programme , the sessions on constructivist methods were conducted on ‘New Paradigms of Learning’ by Dr Vijaya kumari S N, and ‘Learning Strategies’ by Dr Flosy C R D’Souza, associate professors, St Ann’s College of Education.
The content enrichment sessions were held in different subjects by Dr Jayanth, retired professor, St Agnes College, Anitha Gomes, graduate assistant, St Mary’s High School, Gopal Krishna Bhat, graduate assistant, St Aloysius High School and Dimple Quadros, graduate assistant, St Agnes High School, Mangaluru.

The workshop provided a strong platform for an exchange of a forum of vast experiences, ideas about teaching strategies in the learning process and supplemented classroom teaching. Fifty teachers from various schools were present. Sharmila Mascarenhas, assistant professor, St Ann’s College of Education compered the programme. Dr Sr Clare, principal welcomed the gathering and Rose Pinto, assistant professor, St Ann’s College of Education and the convener rendered the vote of thanks. Fifty secondary school teachers were also present.
