Student run over by lorry near Mangalore

Mangaluru (The Hindu) A 17-year-old student was run over by a lorry a few meters before St. Joseph College in Swamilapadavu near Bajpe on Saturday morning.

The Bajpe police said Nayana (17) was being dropped by her relative Ashok on a scooter to the college. As they were nearing the college, a tipper lorry tried to overtake the scooter. In the process the lorry hit the scooter. Nayana fell on the road and died after coming under the wheels of the lorry. Ashok, who fell by the road side, sustained minor injuries. Harish, who runs a tea stall near the accident spot, filed a complaint, the police said. Nayana is the only daughter of Ramesh and Leelavathi, who are beedi workers. They are residents of Kolambe near Bajpe. The police have registered a case against the driver of the tipper lorry.

Woman injured in boulder blasting
A woman was injured due to the blasting of stone boulders for the Right Bank Canal works of the Varahi Irrigation Project at Siddapura village in Kundapur taluk on Friday.

In a complaint lodged at the Shankarnarayana police station, Vanaja Shedti said that boulders were being blast without proper precautions. Some pieces of stone hit her at 6.40 p.m. on Friday, she said. A case had been registered and investigations were on, the police said.

Engineer found with disproportionate assets
The Lokayukta police on Saturday raided the house and office of Public Works Department Junior Engineer Arun Prakash D’Souza from Bantwal for alleged possession of assets disproportionate to his income.

A release said Mr. D’Souza has been accused of owning assets worth Rs. 89.9 lakh as against his income of Rs. 27 lakh.
