Mangaluru: Students of a government school in Moodushedde had a shock of their life, when two bullets fired by a trainee staff-member of the Coast Guard’s firing range missed the target and flew towards the school. They hit the glass-pane of a window of the school, smashing it partially.

Classes were in progress when the incident occurred. Because of the log distance of 200 metres, the effect was not so vigorous and the students were safe. The bullets did not go beyond the glass.

The students initially thought that some miscreant may have had thrown heavy articles at the window. On close verification, two bullets were found at the window.

The staff of the school went to the firing range and urged the personnel in charge to stop the firing practice. The matter did not come to public knowledge until a complaint was filed to the Kavoor police station on Friday, citing negligence on the part of the Coast Guard.

The incident has triggered a demand to shift the firing range elsewhere, since Moodushedde is a residential area and also has a large movement of human population, being located close to the Pilikula nature park.
