Union IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday announced that the government has decided to withdraw controversial Draft National Encryption Policy.
Prasad also said draft encryption policy would be redrawn to specify who it would apply to.
"In view of the concerns raised over the encryption policy, I have asked the draft to be withdrawn and rewritten," Prasad said.
The Minister clarified that draft is not the final view of the government. He also said the government supports the freedom of social media.
As per the proposed draft New Encryption Policy of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), the government would have access to all encrypted information, including personal emails, messages or even data stored on a private business server.
