It's Happy Diwali today

Published On : 11 Nov 2015

Diwali, Festival of lights, is being celebrated across the country with traditional fervour and gaiety; President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and PM Narendra Modi wish people on occasion of Diwali.

The festival of light is being celebrated across the country on Wednesday. The lights also symbolise the victory of light over darkness and of good over evil. This is when India comes alive with the chiming of temple bells, the bursts of crackers, the sparkle of oil lamps and the twinkle of fairy lights. Homes are decorated with flower garlands and bedecked with elaborate rangoli patterns.

During Diwali, worshippers pray to Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth) and Ganesha (the lord of good fortune).

Diwali has a very special significance in Jainism. It falls on the day of Nirvana or liberation of Jain tirthankar Bhagwan Mahavira's soul, the twenty fourth and last Jain Tirthankar. It is celebrated at the same time as the Hindu festival of Diwali. Jains tend to avoid firecrackers during Diwali as they cause harm to living organisms. Diwali is celebrated in atmosphere of austerity, simplicity, serenity, equity, calmness, charity, philanthropy and environment-consciousness. Temples, homes, offices, shops are decorated with lights and diyas.

In a message, President Pranab Mukherjee said, Diwali represents the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. He wished the festival to serve as a catalyst for greater unity within the country.

President appealed to the people to share happiness, help the needy and engage in collective efforts to lead the nation to greater and greater glory.

Vice President M. Hamid Ansari, in his message said that the festival of lights signifies the victory of good over evil and reaffirms people's belief in the noble ideals and morals of Lord Rama's life. He expressed hope that the festival will bring peace, harmony, prosperity and happiness in people's lives.PM has also wished the nation happy Diwali.

US President Barack Obama called PM Modi over telephone on Tuesday and greeted him on Diwali. Prime Minister said that he and President Obama spoke on the Newly established hotline. Prime Minister said that he and president Obama look forward to meeting in Turkey during the G 20 summit. Prime Minister also inquired how Diwali will be celebrated in White House.

Here are some Do's for Deepawali:

• Make Deepawali a festival of light again. Make it brighter instead of more noisy and polluted

• If crackers are must for celebration, people can pool in and try to reduce the total crackers burst in a locality

• Children must be accompanied by adults while bursting crackers, with a bucket of water close by
