‘Kejriwal again’ blitz

New Delhi, Oct. 22: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today launched a campaign saying Delhi wants Arvind Kejriwal “back” as chief minister, taking an early plunge over fears the BJP would project the bigger “Brand Modi” amid talk of elections soon.

“Kejriwal Phir Se (Kejriwal again)”, the blitz on social media, seeks to project Kejriwal as the best man for the top post.

“Don’t want to get electricity bill shocks…Then come to Delhi,” said one tweet by the party, alluding to the power subsidies Kejriwal had doled out as chief minister before quitting in February this year.

Another post, by an AAP supporter and re-tweeted by the party, said: “Delhi wants him back. A humble, honest, firm and assertive chief minister.”

The AAP push has reasons. The BJP went into the recent Maharashtra and Haryana polls with Narendra Modi as its mascot and a punch line, “vote for a Modi government”. No one was projected as the chief ministerial candidate in the two states. The results suggested the tactics had paid off handsomely.

The AAP anticipates the BJP will not pick a chief ministerial face in Delhi too and focus on Modi instead. This has led AAP leaders to hope that an early projection of Kejriwal would make an impact on the hearts and minds of Delhi voters.

“Every Delhiite acknowledges that Arvind Kejriwal had performed well as chief minister. We are trying to re-ignite the memory of those good days among the people,” said AAP leader Ambarish Kumar.

The BJP’s Delhi unit is keen on fresh elections, buoyed by the triumphs in neighbouring Haryana and Maharashtra, but appears to have no strong leader to project as chief minister.

Harsh Vardhan was a credible face in the 2013 state elections but he has since moved to the Centre as health minister.

The AAP is seeking to exploit this gap. In the next step of its campaign, the AAP plans to drive home the message that people should not get fooled as the Prime Minister cannot double as chief minister.
