Lucknow, (IANS) Family members of Superintendent Police (city) Mukul Dwivedi, who was killed in the Mathura violence last week, on Wednesday demanded trial of the district magistrate and the district police chief for his "murder" and for allegedly "mishandling" the whole situation.
Prafulla Dwivedi, younger brother of Mukul Dwivedi, said that the Uttar Pradesh government should order a CBI probe into the whole incident and the circumstances leading to the violence.
If no action is taken against the then District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police Prakesh Singh, Prafulla said, parents of Mukul, his widow and two children will stage a sit-in at Jawaharbagh in Mathura, where the SP was killed.
The Dwivedis have started a campaign for more stringent action against Rakesh Singh and the district magistrate, who they allege, left the police force to go unprepared to Jawaharbagh on June 2.
The Uttar Pradesh government has already transferred both of the officials and has ordered a judicial probe into the incident.
However, anger continues to simmer against the then SSP Rakesh Singh, whom many in the force in Mathura blame for the tragedy.
The violence during an anti-encroachment drive at Jawaharbagh left 29 persons, including two police officials, dead on June 2.
In the past, Singh was suspended after violence in Firozabad but soon found plum postings due to his "political connections", an official alleged.
