One killed in Aligarh Muslim University violence

Lucknow, April 24 (IANS) One person was killed and over a dozen were injured on Sunday when student groups of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) clashed and set varsity property, including vehciles and the proctor office on fire, police said.

Officials said the violence broke out at around 2.00 a.m. when a room of a student named Mohsin, at the Mumtaaz hostel was set on fire. Mohsin lived in room number 12.

He complained to the proctor office that some outsiders have barged into his room and had beaten him up.

There was subsequent exchange of fire between rival groups after which they went on a rampage spree and set on fire a university jeep, the proctor office, vice-chancellor lodge and guest house.

Two students sustained bullet injuries out of which one died in a hospital.

Rapid Action Force (RAF) and extra police force were deployed in the campus.
