Rahul dares Modi to jail him

Published On : 20 Nov 2015

New Delhi, Nov. 19 (The Telegraph): Rahul Gandhi today dared Narendra Modi to jail him if he could find anything against him but stop throwing mud, pointing out that Modi was Prime Minister now and had all the investigating agencies at his disposal.

" Modiji, RSS, sun lo, mujhe itna bhi dar nahi hai aapse (Hear this, Modiji, RSS, I am not the least bit scared of you)," the Congress vice-president declared to frenzied applause from Youth Congress members who had gathered at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to celebrate Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary.

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has alleged that Rahul had claimed British citizenship in the tax returns filed for a company in the UK of which he was director. The BJP yesterday said this is a "serious issue" and it awaits "legal clarification from the Congress".

The Congress had promptly denied Swamy's allegation and released the certificate of incorporation of the company, which showed Rahul's nationality as Indian. It admitted the possibility of a typographical error but argued this did not mean he was hiding his Indian citizenship or had taken British citizenship.

Rahul wanted to settle this row with a big-bang outburst instead of giving clarifications about the possible clerical error that could have caused the alleged discrepancy. The bare-knuckle approach appeared to stem from a realisation that rational explanations would not have discouraged the BJP from dragging the issue and that repeated taunts could create doubts in the people's minds.

" Modiji ab aap Hindustan ke pradhan mantri ho, Opposition mein nahi ho. Chhappan-inch ki chhati nikalo. Aapki sarkar hai. Sare agencies laga lo, investigation karo chhey mahine mein. Aapko kuchh mile to, band karo mujhe. Par ye kachra apne chamcho se hum par fikwate ho, mere parivar par fikwate ho... ye band karo (Modiji, now you are India's Prime Minister, not in the Opposition. Show your 56-inch chest. It is your government, deploy all agencies. Investigate in six months and put me in jail if you find something. But stop using your cronies to throw mud on me and my family)," Rahul dared, playing on Modi's election-time refrain that he had a 56-inch chest.

The audience - full of young activists and a few senior leaders - was in raptures, shouting " Rahul zindabad (long live Rahul)" and clapping incessantly. He had difficulty making himself heard and, as the roar became louder, he gestured with his fingers to stress that he wasn't frightened, not even by a whisker.

Rahul recalled how his family members were personally targeted by the RSS and the BJP in the past. "I was this small, since my birth, I am hearing all these canards. The RSS and the BJP used to throw mud on my grandmother, my father and my mother, who is sitting here. I was so small, I am hearing all this since then... But I am not frightened, I will not back off, I will fight for farmers, workers. I will expose your lies one by one," he declared.

Singh criticism

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today dismissed as "malicious propaganda" Modi's claim that no development had taken place during Congress regimes and lamented that economic policy "had now lost its sense of direction".
