Mulki Payyottu Sadashiv A Salian, the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award winner and the owner of “Nagaraja” the Kambala Kona is no more

Mumbai/Mangaluru, Oct 01: Sadashiv Salian, Karnataka Rajyotsava Awardee -2013, called as the ‘uncrowned king’ of Kambala and native of Payyottu, Mulki breathed his last. He was the owner of ‘Nagaraja’(the Kambala Buffalo) known as the ‘Hatrick hero’, ‘Kambala Karna”, “SharavegadaSaradara” in the world of Kambala(buffalo race).

A week ago he was admitted to the KMC Manglore hospital due to illness and he died of heart attack today morning. He has left behind his wife, two daughters and family members. The family resource said that his funeral will be held on Friday morning (oct 02) at his residence in Payyottu, Mulki.

Payyottu family has been participating in the folk sport of Tulunadu called Kambala since five decades and they have won several awards in this sport. Nagaraja, the buffalo continuously participated in the Kambala for two decades and got retired at the age of 20. The Payyottu family brought him up as their own son. A few years ago he died of old age but found healthy until his death except a few teeth waned away. He died on June 6, 2009 .

He took birth in 1985 and in 1988 he joined Payyottu family and was named as “Nagaraja”. He participated more than 500 times in the Kambala and won more than 115 gold and silver medals and brought fame to the Payyottu family. He started his race at the age of 4 and continued till he became 20. Central postal department had also brought out a stamp with his picture. He was so popular that his selling rate was fixed to more than 25 lakhs. Jagannath V Kotian (brother-in-law of the deceased)-the owner of Lalith Hotel in Goregaon and ex-director of Bharat Bank said that through Nagaraja-the king of Kambalarace we were honoured with Karnataka Rajyotsava Award.
