REMEMBRANCE PROGRAMME OF DR. SHIVARAM KARANTH AT KARNATAKA SANGHA

Mumbai, Oct. 11: The Karnataka Sangha Mumbai Sadananda Suvarna Cultural Foundation Trust has conducted the remembrance programme of Late “Dr. Shivaram Karanth”, which is being conducted by it annually, on Saturday evening at the Samarasa auditorium of Karnataka Sangha at Matunga (West).

The programme was held under the presidentship of Dr. P.G. Burde, the President of Karnataka Sangha and Mr. Sadananda Suvarna, the Director of the Foundation was present during the occasion. The renowned critic of Delhi and the folk scholar – Dr. Purushothama Bilimale was present on this occasion and spoke some words about “20th century’s greatest wonder– Karanth” and described the life style of Mr. Karanth.

Dr. Bilimale said, “I think the government is providing little honor to Karanth. The Karnataka government has not given much honor as compared to the honor given to other brilliants. But, it is highly commendable on the part of Mumbai Kannadigas that they are remembering Karanth. He is not encouraged at national level. “Bettadha Jeeva’ of Mr. Karanth is an excellent book at global level. Karanth stands different in 20th century. During 1930s, when independence fighting was at the extreme, he has given most excellent books. During this period, the real problem of the nation lied in the allotment of lands. On this basis, he wrote a book “Chomana Dhudi”. The novel “Balveye Belaku” is the most favourite book of 21st century where the young generation is addicted to SMS. The society and the culture were equally treated by Karanth. In most of his novels, he has written the female roles where feminists can be seen. He was broad-mined”.

Sadananda Suvarna gave the introductory speech and said, “In the beginning, the rembrance programme was conducted for the continuous 5-6 days, then reduced to one day and now resulted into a few hours programme in a day. This was possible earlier because of the co-operation of like-minded friends. We are convinced that at least we can do this much in a commercial city like Mumbai. I am luckier enough to have an opportunity to make a documentary film. He was appreciating the interaction of Mumbai Kannadigas when he came to Mumbai and inaugurated the Kannada Dept and Science Academy of Mumbai University. In the Science Academy programme, he appreciated the scientists. His speech was very exciting. His plays attracted the Mumbai Kannadigas. Apart from Mumbai, we don’t get information of drama theatre anywhere else. We should not forget such a genius – Mr. Karanth. Such programmes are conducted based on the thought that his autobiography should live forever. I wish to retain his memory for the future generation of the society and his relationship with Mumbai Kannadigas should be retained as a vital force”.

Dr. Burde said that Suvarna Foundation makes Dr. Karath still alive in Mumbai. He also said that the foundation will strengthen the Mumbai relationship of Mr. Karanth by conducting drawing competition in the name of Karanth in a huge children programme.
Sadananda Suvarna Cultural Foundation’s Dr. Vyasaraj Ninjoor, Gopal Thracy and Sa. Daya, Dr. Sunita M Shetty, M.M. Kori, Dr. S.K. Bhavani, Shyamala Madhav, Dr. M. Raghava, Dr. Girija Shastry, Dr. Vishwanath Karnad, Chitrapu K.M. Kotian, P.V. Aithal, G.T. Acharya and others were present.

The Ex-Vice President of Karnataka Sangha – Dr. Bharathkumar Polipu welcomed the gathering and presented the programme. The Vice President – Srinivas Jokatte introduced the dignitaries. The Honorary Secretary – Omdas Kannangar proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the association.
