Mumbai (The Hindu): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said the new, state-of-the-art Police Commissionerate building has facilities a step ahead of countries like Israel and England.
Mr Fadnavis was speaking at the inauguration of the new building at Crawford Market on Monday morning, where Maharashtra DGP Praveen Dixit was present along with all top police officials. The building has been constructed in the same compound as the old one. The bhoomipoojan ceremony for the building was held in 2002, and construction began in 2011.
The six-storey building includes a modern command and control centre linked to all CCTV cameras in Mumbai, a citizen help centre as well as call-receiving desks for all of the Mumbai Police Helplines. The rather spacious air-conditioned building has the latest computers and equipment and high-speed Internet installed. Officials said the command and control centre is linked to the citywide CCTV project, which was kicked off earlier this year. The first phase of the project is complete, while the second phase is expected to be completed by April this year, and the third phase by October.
“The command control centre in this building is state-of-the-art and is one step ahead than those in London and Israel. The citizen help centre in this building will be a pleasant surprise for citizens,” said Mr Fadnavis.
The CM also inaugurated a Police Housing building with 136 quarters for policemen in Worli on Monday. Speaking about the issue of police housing in the state, he said, “Our policemen are currently living in spaces the British wouldn’t house their prisoners in. No policeman should be without a house. Let the DGP come up with a proposal to provide permanent houses for policemen. We will provide all the help that we can.”
Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmad Javed said that the infrastructure in the new building would be convenient for the policemen to function in that would consequently improve their efficiency.
