‘Don’t use public money for Thackeray memorial’

Published On : 30 Dec 2015

Mumbai (The Hindu): Opposing the decision of oil companies to keep the flame burning at Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray’s memorial at Shivaji Park, the Congress on Tuesday said that public money should not be spent in such a manner.

Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who was in Mumbai on Tuesday, said that the oil companies will foot the bill to keep the flame burning. The approximate expense for this is Rs one lakh per month.

The cost of maintaining the park and flame is borne by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and it comes to around Rs 12 lakh per annum. Following the minister’s assurance, the cost for the flame will come from the Corporate Social Responsibility funds of these oil companies.

While the Sena welcomed the decision, the Congress said it was gross abuse of public money. “It is absolutely wrong to pay the price of the flame from public sector companies. Sena is rich enough to pay for the bills and the party should be able to give money for this. Why is it that companies are asked to pay the price?” asked Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant.
