Mumbai (DNA): Suburban train services along the main line of Central Railway (CR) were affected on Tuesday by a delay of around 20 minutes, after two compartments of a locomotive got derailed at CST.

The incident happened in wee hours of Tuesday, 8 December morning, around 2 am, when an empty locomotive crashed into the buffers at platform number 5 of CST.

"It happened when the local was shunting from the platform. The train rammed into the buffer-heads at the station and dismantled them. The local also uprooted part of the platform, railing and security grills in the process. Two compartments were derailed in the accident," a senior CR official told Iamin.

A special crane and hauling tools were pressed into action, after which the derailed coaches were cleared by 6 am, taking a toll on the suburban train schedule of CR.

With service suspended from the affected platform, trains at CST were run from the remaining platforms, delaying the local train timetable by 20 minutes.

"There is damage to the track and other equipment on the platform. Thus, services have been shut and regular train operations are run from other platforms," the official added. He assured that services will back on schedule, after the damage to platform number 5 is repaired.

Meanwhile, commuters suffered the brunt of the incident, as both fast and slow track trains ran behind schedule.

Irked by train delay for the second consecutive delay, commuter Shelby Madanmohan who travels from Mulund to Curry Road by a slow train every day said, "Slow locals were late and over-crowded today. Since the fast trains too were late, the local was even more crowded. Even yesterday, there was a delay due to a rail track fracture along the CST fast line between Kalyan and Diva. The delays are now becoming an almost everyday affair."

A similar incident was witnessed on June 28, 2015 along the Western Railway, when a train over-sped from Churchgate station, crashing into the buffer. Five commuters were injured in that incident.
