Mumbai (The Hindu): Advocate Neeraj Gupta, who was representing Rahul Raj Singh, accused of abetting the suicide of television actress Pratyusha Banerjee, on Wednesday discharged himself from the case. Mr Gupta told The Hindu that he quit the case because he was being repeatedly misled by Rahul and his family members.

“I quit the case because I had been repeatedly misled since day one. I know the television industry well and since the day of the suicide, I have been getting calls from hundreds of people who are telling me that I am making a mistake by representing someone like Rahul. While he and his father were talking about Pratyusha being depressed due to financial difficulties, I am finding out from external sources that he had a string of relationships with several young girls from the industry and later abandoned them. Rahul and even his father were claiming to the media that Pratyusha was in such dire financial straits that his family used to give her money, whereas the truth is that he was living off her income. I finally quit because my conscience would not allow me to go on anymore. Rahul needs to be punished in the severest way possible by the law.”

Mr Gupta was replaced in ythe case by Ashok Sarogi.

Ms Banerjee was found to have hanged herself in her Goregaon apartment on Friday last week.

The police had on Tuesday registered an FIR of abetment to suicide, assault, and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code against Mr Singh after Ms Banerjee’s parents’ statement alleging repeated, prolonged abuse on his part.

On Wednesday, the Bangur Nagar police recorded the statement of Ms Banerjee’s housemaid. Officials said that the housemaid, in her statement, has alleged that there used to be regular fights between the couple, and that Mr Singh had assaulted Ms Banerjee at least once in front of her.

Several of Pratyusha’s neighbours have also told the police that they would overhear loud and violent fights between the couple at all times of the day.
