RSS clarifies on Bhaiyyaji remark

Published On : 03 Apr 2016

Mumbai (The Hindu): The RSS on Saturday clarified that Mr. Joshi had not demanded any change in the national flag or anthem.

RSS general secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi kicked up a controversy on Friday by claiming that “Vande Mataram” was the real national anthem while Jana Gana Mana was the “constitutionally-mandated” anthem.

“Jana Gana Mana is today our national anthem. It has to be respected. There is no reason why it should evoke any other sentiment. But it is the national anthem as decided by the Constitution. If one considers the true meaning, then Vande Mataram is the national anthem,” Mr. Joshi said at a function in Mumbai.

The RSS on Saturday clarified that Mr. Joshi had not demanded any change in the national flag or anthem.

RSS spokesperson Manmohan Vaidya said Mr. Joshi was speaking on the difference between “Rajya (State power)” and “Rashtra (nation)” when he made the comparison between Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana.

In a statement, Mr. Vaidya said, “In 1947, Constituent Assembly had adopted the Tricolour as our State flag, and was subsequently retained as that of the Republic of India. It is mandatory that every citizen of India should respect this symbol. The saffron flag has been revered by the people since time immemorial as a symbol of our ancient culture. ”
