Vihar lake overflows; city receives 98.4 mm rain on wet Monday

Mumbai: The city recorded 94.8 mm rainfall till Monday morning, receiving almost 72% of its annual average rainfall already. Vihar lake is the latest to overflow, after Tulsi and Modak Sagar.

Mumbai saw heavy rains on Sunday, which continued till Monday morning, inconveniencing office-goers. The India Meteorological Department's Santacruz observatory recorded 94.8 mm rainfall till 8.30 a.m. while Colaba recorded 11.6 mm.

The showers continued throughout the day and up to 8.30 p.m., stood at 35.8 mm and 16 mm respectively. Figures for Santacruz are indicative of the entire city.

According to data from the BMC’s Automatic Weather Stations, the island city received 57.09% rainfall, the eastern suburbs received 76.4%, while the western suburbs received 56.83%. With this, Mumbai has received 1817.7mm rainfall so far, 72.27% of its annual average. On Monday, there were 46 incidents of trees or branches falling, 10 short circuits and eight slab collapses across the city.

The BMC is continuing its drive to clean up beaches and promenades, where a large amount of trash is being deposited due to the high tide. On Monday alone, 11 tonnes of garbage were lifted from Marine Drive. The figure for Dadar and Mahim beach stood at 65 tonnes, Girgaum Chowpatty at 4 tonnes, Juhu beach at 90 tonnes, Versova beach at 25 tonnes and Gorai beach at 15 tonnes.

Meanwhile, a minor fire broke out on the 27th floor of Wellington Heights at Tardeo at around 2 p.m. on Monday. Two fire engines were sent to the spot and it was doused immediately.
