Mumbai (The Hindu): Thane police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the road contractor, officials from the Thane corporation, fire brigade officials and local corporator following a woman’s death after the footpath she was walking on caved in.
Jamila Khan (35), a Rabodi resident, was walking on a footpath adjoining the security wall of Thane Central Jail on Saturday at around 9 pm, when a portion of it caved in. Khan fell into the 20 feet-deep pit. She died of suffocation after she was caught in the debris.
Khan’s four children and her father-in-law, who were also walking on the road could not save her because it was dark. Two local youths, Shoaib and Shafique Khan, jumped into the pit and removed the body of the victim.
“The family alleged that despite informing, the fire brigade reached the spot very late,” said a senior police officer. The victim had gone to Uthalsar with her kids and father-in-law in the latter’s autorickshaw. The family had to walk after the tyre of the rickshaw got punctured. The area was tense after a mob protested against corrupt officials.
