74-year-old man immolates himself in Kundapur

Published On : 06 Feb 2016

Kundapur (The Hindu): A 74-year-old man committed suicide by immolating himself inside his shop at Tallur village, near Kundapur, on Friday.

According to Kundapur police, Koti Poojary was running a cloth shop for decades. He used to leave his house early in the morning for a walk. But on Friday, he came to his shop at around 5.30 a.m. and locked himself in. He then doused himself with petrol and immolated himself, according to the police.

Local people rushed to the shop after noticing smoke and fire. But it was too late as clothes inside the shop too had caught fire and Poojary had died.

The body was later taken to the Government Hospital, where the post-mortem was conducted.

P.M. Diwaker, Kundapur Circle Police Inspector, said, quoting relatives of the deceased, that Poojary had taken loans and was depressed, and this might have been the reason for him to take the extreme step.

A case had been registered at the Kundapur police station and investigations were on, the police said.
