Mangaluru, (The Hindu): Halasina Gaarige, Halasina Gatti and Uppad Pacchil made from jackfruit were among the many local delicacies that people relished during the annual Aati Koota at the heritage village of Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama here on Sunday. The Nisargadhama has been organising the event annually at the Guttu Mane — the traditional house in the heritage village — to showcase the lifestyle in the region during the Aati [Aashada] month of the Solar calendar, for the last 10 years.

A majority of those who participated in the programme were councillors from Mangaluru City Corporation and members of the local bodies in the district, who had come to attend a workshop on solid waste management. Also, there were a few who had bought coupons for ? 500 to attend the programme.

The highlight of the programme was the Yakshagana performance by Chikka Mela of the Bappanadu temple. Artistes staged two short 15-minute skits, “Vidyamate Kalyana” and “Bappanadu Kshetra Mahatme”, in the front courtyard of the Guttu Mane. The performance by these artistes was to signify the practice of the Chikka Mela visiting houses and staging short Yakshagana episodes at a time when its outdoor performance was impossible during the monsoon.

Following the Yakshagana episodes, the visitors were served lunch which had various delicacies such as tajanku, tevu, patrode, gendedadye, akki unde, tekkeredadye, guriyappa, jeegujje podi, genasina tindi and kukkuda mambala.

Minister in-charge of the district B. Ramanath Rai inaugurated the programme. Mayor Kavita Sanil, corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazir, president of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Sahitya Parishat Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and Executive Director of Nisargadhama V. Prasanna were among those who participated in the programme.
