Ahmed Qureshi granted bail

Published On : 07 May 2017

Mangaluru: Ahmed Qureshi, the accused in an attempt-to-murder case who made headlines over claims by his family and some organizations that he had been subjected to police atrocity, has been granted bail by the VI additional district and sessions court. Judge Puttaranga Swamy granted bail to Qureshi on the condition that he execute a bond of Rs one lac. Qureshi is currently under treatment at Wenlock hospital.

While on bail, he will have to appear before the police three times a month. His lawyer Dinesh Ulaipady said that though CID had obtained permission to examine Qureshi in jail on April 25, none of the CID officers have met him to this day.

He also expressed suspicions over a document related to the case alleged to have been obtained by the CID from the court being posted in a WhatsApp group.

Ahmed Qureshi was arrested in March in connection to the murder attempt on Prakash Poojary in Suratkal. His brothers and some organizations, particularly the PFI, have been claiming that he was tortured in police custody, and alleging that he lost a kidney because of it. The police have denied the claims.
