BJP unlikely to get president’s post in Belthangady TP

Published On : 13 Apr 2016

Udupi (The Hindu): The BJP’s hopes of leading the Belthangady Taluk Panchayat have been dashed with the government reserving the post of president of the TP for Scheduled Castes (woman) in the draft reservation list. The party does not have any elected member in the panchayat representing the Scheduled Castes. The party had emerged victorious in the election.

In the election conducted a month ago to the 26 constituencies of the panchayat, the BJP won 14 seats and the Congress 12 seats. Now it would be the turn of the Congress to “capture power” at the panchayat.

With this, though the BJP had won a majority of seats in four of six panchayat raj bodies in Dakshina Kannada, it could now lead only three.

They are Sullia and Puttur taluk panchayats and the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat. The Congress will lead Bantwal, Mangaluru, and Belthangady taluk panchayats.

Eligible candidates

According to K. Prathap Simha Nayak, president, Dakshina Kannada unit of the BJP, the party has candidates from all reservation categories eligible to contest for the post of presidents in Sullia and Puttur taluk panchayats and in the zilla panchayat.

In the 36-member zilla panchayat, the BJP has bagged 21 seats and the Congress 15 seats. In the draft reservation list, the post of president of the zilla panchayat has been reserved for Scheduled Castes and vice-president for general category (woman).

The party has two eligible candidates, both women, to be fielded for the post of president.

They are Meenakshi Babu Mugera elected from Panaje constituency in Puttur taluk and Sujatha elected from Shirthady constituency in Belthnagady taluk. Both have been elected to the zilla panchayat for the first time. The party has no male candidate eligible to contest for the post of president.

The winning party has 13 women eligible to contest for the post of vice-president.
