The teacher, detained for questioning, was arrested after he admitted to the crime, a senior police officials said, as the action came a day after the victim's mother lodged a complaint about the incident which occurred on October 28 and 29.

"We had received a complaint that an individual named Jayashankar, who is Hindi teacher in the school has committed the crime. On the basis of this, we have arrested him. During the interrogation in his confessional statement he has admitted to it," City Police Commissioner M N Reddi said.

Parents gathered at the school premises demanding answer from authorities of the school which according to police officials flouted safety norms and demanded police handover the accused to them.

Questioned about the recurring incidents of sexual assaults on minor girls in schools, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, "These rapes are happening within the premises of the school, particularly in private schools. The management of private schools have to take care of all these things. We have already issued circulars to managements...."

Home Minister K J George said "....There are so many schools; these things are happening within the school. Police can't go and stand there. Even after all our efforts we are not able to stop it, because these acts are being committed by the school staff within the school premises...."

The latest incident comes just five days after an office assistant in a school here was arrested for sexual assault of a three-and-a-half-year girl studying in nursery.

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her 63-year-old teacher inside her school premises over a period of time. The offence came to light in early August, barely a month after the rape of a six-year-old girl at 'Vibgyor High' school here which led to street protests.
