Mumbai (The Hindu): The court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate extended police custody of the two accused in the Bhaskar Shetty murder case here on Friday.

The police custody of Rajeshwari, wife of Bhaskar Shetty, and Navneet, son of Bhaskar Shetty, was extended till August 16. “Though the police asked for extension of police custody of the accused for a week, the court extended it till August 16,” said Praveen Kumar R.N., Senior Assistant Public Prosecutor.

Both Rajeshwari and Navneet were produced before the judge amid tight security at the District Courts Complex. A large number of people had gathered at the complex, when the accused were being brought in the evening. Some in the crowd shouted: “Beat them”.

Bhaskar Shetty, a businessman, went missing from his house here on July 28 and his mot her Gulabi Shetty lodged a missing complaint at the Manipal police station on July 29.

The police arrested Rajeshwari (46) and Navneet (24) on the charge of murdering Shetty and destroying evidence, here on August 7.

They arrested Niranjan Bhat (25), an archak who was close to Rajeshwari and Navneet, at Nitte on August 8 as he is said to have taken part in disposing of Bhaskar Shetty’s body after burning it at a Yagna Kund room in his house at Nandalike village, about 25 km from here. He is said to have disposed of the body in a rivulet at Palli village. So far, the police have not recovered the body.

The police arrested two more accused, Srinivas Bhat, father of Niranjan Bhat, and Raghavendra, Niranjan’s car driver, at Nandalike village on August 10 on the charge of destruction of evidence in the case.

Investigation
Meanwhile, the police continued their investigation in the murder case. A top officer in the Police Department said that a team of DNA experts had collected samples from the room in a lodge owned by Bhaskar Shetty, where he used to stay.

The police also took the accused Rajeshwari and Navneet and conducted “mahazar” at many places. They took Rajeshwari to a pharmacy from where she purchased chilly spray, which was used in spraying at Bhaskar Shetty’s face, before murdering him.

They procured several crucial CCTV footages from different locations related to the murder case. They were questioning some persons in connection with the case, the officer said.
