Udupi (THe Hindu): The Udupi City Municipal Council is drawing up a new plan to beautify the six-and-half-acre Bhujanga Park, which is the green lung of the city.

This garden also has a great significance as it was here that Mahatma Gandhi delivered a speech during his only visit to the temple-town on February 25, 1934.

Though the park has been renovated twice in the last 15 years, it has been dogged by one problem or the other. A tar road divides the eastern and western sections of the garden. One big problem is that the park’s mesh fencing has given away at some places in both the sections.

The eastern section of the park, which has a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in a mantapa -like structure and a radio tower, has been in a state of neglect for over five years. A small herbal garden developed there has also vanished. The children’s corner in the eastern section too is in a poor condition and has a broken swing set and a broken merry-go-round.

Though an amphitheatre was constructed at a cost of Rs. 1 crore in 2012 in the western section of the park, it has remained unused.

To deal with all these problems, the CMC has decided to use Rs. 1 crore made available under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme for the renovation of both sections of the park.

The money under this scheme is released in four instalments over a period of four years. The first instalment of Rs. 25 lakh has already been released.

“We are giving priority to the construction of a concrete compound with four gates around the garden as it will stop the intrusion by dogs, cattle and others,” said Shashidhar Hegde, Junior Engineer, City Municipal Council.

The City Municipal Council would be using the funds under the scheme to beautify the park in phases. It will spruce up the children’s corner and lay a lawn throughout the park. The City Municipal Council would also construct a roof over the amphitheatre so that theatre groups could stage plays in the future.

Presently there are over 10 benches on a rock overlooking the western section of the park.

Five gazeboes would also be constructed there.

“We want to improve the facilities so that children could play and people relax and unwind during weekends,” Meenakshi Bannanje, president of the City Municipal Council, said.
