Bengaluru, DHNS Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday urged people to initiate criminal action against any government officer who displays ‘lackadaisical attitude’ towards implementing welfare schemes.

Speaking at the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Dr B R Ambedkar organised by the HAL SC/ST Employees’ and Officers’ Association, he said, “Based on their population, we have allocated around 20% (Rs 19,457 crore) of the state’s annual outlay for the welfare of the SC/ST communities. No previous government has ever earmarked such a huge amount in any of the states. These grants do not lapse and can be returned to the government without implementing programmes,” he noted.

Siddaramaiah said the programmes initiated by his government are inspired by the vision of Ambedkar, “who was a saviour not only of the Dalit community but also of those who were discriminated against by society.”

He reiterated that the government was committed to ensuring social justice. He said the state government was planning to hold a global convention to commemorate Ambedkar Jayanti.

Earlier, the members of HAL SC/ST Employees’ and Officers’ Association urged the chief minister to provide reservation for the SC/ST communities in the private sector, but Siddaramaiah chose to dodge the request.

Public Works Minister H C Mahadevappa lamented that even after 69 years of independence, inequality prevailed in society.
