Cancer centre to come up at Yenepoya

Mangaluru, (The Hindu): Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) and Tata Trusts, Mumbai, on Tuesday signed a letter of intent (LOI) to start and operate a comprehensive cancer centre on Yenepoya campus at Deralakatte with 120 beds.

This facility will work in conjunction with the 1,000-bed Yenepoya Medical College Hospital. R. Venkataramanan, Managing Trustee, Tata Trusts and Y. Abdulla Kunhi, Chancellor of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), signed the agreement.

A symposium on “Cancer prevention and control by health promotion and early detection” had been organised on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Venkataramanan said that holding awareness programmes on cancer helped in its early detection. He mentioned about charitable services of the trusts. K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangluru University, spoke on the importance of cancer prevention, detection and management at the early stage. A CD on cancer awareness programme brought out as part of cancer awareness outreach programme of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) was released on this occasion.

Mr. Abdulla Kunhi and R. Vishal, Director, Municipal Administration, spoke.

M. Vijayakumar, Vice-Chancellor of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), spoke on the genesis, interventions and management of cancer awareness outreach programme of the university, a release said.

The inaugural session was followed with poster presentation, scientific sessions and panel discussion on cancer prevention and control by health promotion and early detection. As many as 150 delegates attended it, a release said.
