Clamour for statehood grows in NK region

Published On : 26 May 2015

Bengaluru (The Hindu): Sugarcane growers’ association threatens to launch agitation. The clamour for statehood for north Karnataka has increased with one more organisation — State Sugarcane Growers’ Association — threatening to launch an agitation against the continuing neglect of the region.

President of the Kalaburagi unit of the Association Jagadish Patil Rajapur accused the State government and the Sugar Commissionerate of adopting a step motherly attitude towards sugarcane growers of the region while fixing the State Administered Price (SAP) for the crop supplied to sugar factories in the region.

Mr. Rajapur said that despite the fact that the recovery percentage of the sugar in the sugarcane supplied to the factories in south Karnataka districts was 9.62 per cent and 11.22 per cent in north Karnataka, the Sugar Commissioner has fixed a higher SAP for the sugarcane supplied to the factories in south Karnataka and lower SAP for the north Karnataka region.

Mr. Rajapur said that while the SAP for the south Karnataka districts has been fixed at Rs. 2,500 per tonne, the SAP fixed for the Hyderabad Karnataka region was Rs. 2,000 per tonne. The SAP fixed for the rest of the north Karnataka districts is at Rs. 2,300 per tonne.

He said that despite repeated appeals to the State government to correct the anomaly and fix a uniform SAP for the entire State, nothing has been done so far.” This only exhibited the continued negligent and discriminatory attitude of the State government towards the interests of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region,” he said. The only solution for this sort of attitude appears to be a separate State for the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, Mr. Rajapur said.

The association now proposes to seek judicial remedy to the “apathy” of the State government and sugar commissioner by filing a Public Interest Litigation in the Karnataka High Court seeking uniform SAP for the entire State. “The State government has also done very little to force the sugar factories in the region to clear last year’s dues of Rs. 330 crore as per the SAP fixed last year,” he said
