Belagavi, DHNS: Two classrooms at Government Kannada Primary School No 17 at Laxmi Road, Bharat Nagar, were found vandalised on Monday. In one classroom, school documents, attendance registers and other materials have been set on fire and desks damaged. The other classroom was strewn with torn documents, liquor bottles and cigarette ashes. Copies of students’ Aadhaar cards were also burnt.

The school shares its fence with the Shahapur police station. Police are investigating the matter on the basis of a complaint filed by headmistress Shailaja Kuknoor. The incident, which may have happened between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, has heightened linguistic tension in Belagavi, as the school is located in a residential colony inhabited mostly by Marathi speakers.

Lohit Morkar, member, School Development Management Committee (SDMC), blamed “lax” policing for the incident. He said the police didn’t heed earlier requests to keep a vigil on the school during holidays and prevent the entry of intruders and trespassers.

He said that residents of surrounding localities played in the school at the weekend, with some of them organising parties where alcohol was consumed after dusk. He further said the local MLA, Sambhaji Patil, hadn’t fulfilled the demand installing surveillance cameras on the school premises.
