Coast Guard ship ‘Shoor’ arrives to its base in Mangaluru

Mangaluru (The Hindu): Coastal security, particularly of Karnataka, has received a shot in the arm as an advanced new ship ‘Shoor’ of the Indian Coast Guard commissioned about two weeks ago arrived to its base in Mangaluru on Tuesday.

The Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Nitin Jairam Gadkari had commissioned it in Goa on April 11.

The 105-meter long ‘Shoor’, an offshore patrol vessel, was the fifth ship of the coast guard based in Mangaluru at New Mangalore Port.

Designed and built by M/s Goa Shipyard Ltd., tt can carry a helicopter and five boats. The ship has been fitted with advanced navigation and communication equipment, sensors and machinery. It also has the capabilities to carry pollution response equipment to combat oil spill contamination at sea.

After receiving the ship here, K.R. Suresh, Commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka, said that it was a major milestone in augmenting maritime security of Karnataka. It was the largest ship of the Coast Guard in Karnataka.
