Published On : 19 Oct 2015

Mangaluru (The Hindu): They open new Twitter account, revamp Facebook page and their webpage.Following directions from the State police to be active on social media, the Dakshina Kannada district police recently opened a new Twitter account @spdkpolice. It has also revamped its Facebook page (Dakshina Kannada District Police) and its webpage — dkpolice.blogspot.in.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. said the intention behind revamping the webpage, facebook account and opening the new Twitter account was to make use of these new mediums to stay connected with people.

“We have been in touch with people physically by holding meetings and awareness programmes at regular intervals. These are the new mediums through which we can reach out to many youngsters,” Mr. Sharanappa said. The revamped webpage developed by Waseem Shaan, an employee of Diya Systems, provides information about the police setup of the district and also the history of the organisation in this region. It also provides names of the police stations and contact numbers and emails of officers in-charge of these stations. It also has information about cyber crime, women and child safety and other links to other useful websites. “People can share or pass on information with me and other police officers using these mediums,” Mr. Sharanappa said. The Superintendent of Police said people will be provided information of various activities and also of crime through these mediums.

In order to increase vigil and prevent untoward incidents, the Dakshina Kannada police have asked the district administration to install closed circuit cameras in as many as 70 places in the city. As many as 60 CCTVs have been installed at 18 places in the district, said Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. He said CCTVs with night vision capacity, installed last year, have been helpful .
