DK prohibits new private wells within 500 mt of public water sources

Published On : 24 Apr 2015

Mangaluru (The Hindu): Though Dakshina Kannada district has a healthy groundwater level, average 11.81 m, the administration has prohibited sinking of private open borewells within 500 mt radius of public sources of drinking water.

The administration has notified 5,848 such sources in the official gazette on April 2 and became the first district to do so in the State, said Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim. Though the average groundwater level in the district is satisfactory, curbs have been placed for abundant caution. During monsoon, groundwater level reaches 3 mt, he added.

Mr. Ibrahim told presspersons here on Thursday that those sinking private open or borewells within 500 mt radius of public sources should mandatorily obtain permission from the ground water authority. The authority may or may not give the permission after studying the groundwater levels in the region. For sinking wells and borewells beyond 500 mt of such sources, permission from local authorities is mandatory, he added.

Mrutyanjaya, Senior Geologist with the Groundwater Authority said as of March 2015 the groundwater level was 11.54 mt in Bantwal Taluk, 9.68 mt in Belthangady Taluk, 16.38 mt in Mangaluru Taluk, 9.5 mt in Puttur Taluk and 11.25 mt in Sullia Taluk.

He said the authority would erect campaign plaques in the premises of all local authorities — gram panchayats, municipal bodies and others — to create awareness about the importance of groundwater.
