Elections for 25 Council seats today

Published On : 27 Dec 2015

Bengaluru, DHNS: The elections to 25 seats in the Legislative Council will be held on Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm, where 1.07 lakh voters will decide the fate of the three political parties that are desperately vying for an upper hand in the Council.

The term of 25 MLCs is ending on January 5, which has paved way for the elections. Counting of votes would be on December 30. These elections assume significance, especially to the ruling Congress, which is hoping to gain a majority in the Council. In the 75 member House, the BJP and JD(S) put together form a majority, with 30 and 11 members, respectively. The Congress has only 28 members. This has been posing a problem whenever a bill comes up for consideration in the Upper House.

Having formed no alliances, all three parties are contesting independently. No political party has fielded candidates for all the seats. All the three parties have rebel candidates.

In all, 125 candidates have entered the fray. While it will be a keenly contested fight between the Congress and the BJP in north Karnataka constituencies, the JD(S) is making all out efforts to retain its standing in the Vokkaliga dominated constituencies, including Hassan, Bengaluru Rural, Mandya and Mysuru. The regional party also hopes to gain a foothold in Kolar and Tumakuru.

For the Congress, Dakshina Kannada and Bengaluru have emerged as problem areas, with two rebel candidates, former minister Jayaprakash Hegde and Dayanand Reddy, choosing to contest as Independents.

The duo has been expelled for going against the party diktat.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha, “micro observers” (largely Central government officials) will be deputed to all the polling stations to ensure free and fair elections.

Anil Kumar Jha has not categorised the stations as “sensitive” and “hyper-sensitive.”
