‘Give priority to supplying water to parched areas’

Udupi (The Hindu): Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, on Monday directed panchayat development officers and village secretaries to give priority to the supply of drinking water in the water scarce areas of Udupi Assembly constituency.

He was chairing a meeting of PDOs and village secretaries on supply of drinking water in Udupi Assembly Constituency here.

Mr. Madhwaraj said that providing water should be given top priority. Except for Varambally, Badanidiyur and Kemmanu, all other gram panchayts in the constituency had areas which faced drinking water scarcity.

The PDOs should immediately check all the water sources in these villages. This included ponds, open wells and bore wells. They should also make a list of areas facing water scarcity and submit it to the Task Force for Drinking Water which was functioning under his chairmanship.

The Task Force would then make arrangements for supply of drinking water through tankers. “No file related to drinking water should be kept pending in gram panchayats or other offices. If any file on drinking water was found pending for over 24 hours, action will be taken against the official concerned,” he said.

He directed the Assistant Executive Engineer, Water Supply, Satish, to inspect the functioning of all borewells and pumpsets installed at water sources. He directed the officials of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company to provide power connections to drinking water pump sets immediately.

Janardhan Tonse, zilla panchayat member, said that there was severe water shortage in his Kallianpur Zilla Panchayat constituency area and urged for water projects to be taken under the Multi Village Scheme (MVS).

Mr. Madhwaraj said the Union government had stopped funding the MVS. Earlier, both the Union and the State governments used to contribute funds of 50 per cent each for the MVS. Now the State would have to decide on the funding of MVS, he said.

Mr. Satish suggested that the help of Indian Space Research Organisation could also be taken to conduct hydrology survey of water parched villages. This would make it easier to locate the areas which had water and then to utilise it. This had been done in some districts of North Karnataka, he said.
