Bengaluru, DHNS: JD(S) national president H?D?Deve Gowda has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him not to allow the dilution of powers of Commercial Taxes departments of the states under the Goods and Service Taxes (GST) regime.

In the letter, copies of which were released to the media on Sunday, Gowda has stated that attempts were being made to empower Central Excise depa-rtment to administer the GST?at the cost of Commercial Taxes departments of the states.

He stated that it had been agre-ed that under the GST regime, the states will relinquish their right to tax goods. In reciprocation, the power to tax services was assured to the states.

“Any attempt to restrict empowerm-ent to the state in administeri-ng tax on services would amo-unt to the Centre going back on its earlier assurances and end-anger the principles of federalism as well as fiscal autonomy of the state”, the letter states.
