Groups protest over Vemula’s death

Published On : 21 Jan 2016

Mangaluru (The Hindu): Democratic Youth Federation of India, Students Islamic Organisation and members of other organisations on Wednesday demanded action against those who allegedly abetted the suicide of research student Rohith Vemula of Hyderabad.

Addressing protesters before the office of Deputy Commissioner, president of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations Narendra Nayak said that Rohith Vemula belonged to Ambedkar Students Association of the University of Hyderabad that was among the many progressive organisations working towards building scientific temper.

Vested interests were allegedly involved in accusing students like Vemula for anti-national activities, he said.

Mr. Nayak accused the Union Government of allegedly targeting talented students from Dalit communities by booking false cases and forcing them to leave their studies.

He also accused the Congress of allegedly not showing much concern for Vemula.

They were just shredding crocodile tears over Vemula’s suicide, Mr. Nayak said.

The Students Islamic Organisation of India activists took out a protest rally from Ambedkar Circle to the office of Deputy Commissioner where a protest meet was held on Wednesday evening.
